Ab trainers, ab rollers and core machines for home: what really works, what's hype, and our tested pick.
Ab machines promise a lot. Some genuinely help you train your core with better form, and some are mostly marketing. This section gives you the honest version, including the ab trainer we test at home.

The honest truth about ab machines
- No machine burns belly fat on its own. Spot reduction doesn’t work. Visible abs come from overall fat loss through diet and activity.
- What ab kit can do is make core exercises easier to learn, more comfortable on your neck and back, and more varied, so you’re more likely to keep at it.
- A strong core helps posture, lifting, running and reduces strain on your lower back.
Types of ab equipment
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Ab roller / wheel | Cheap, very effective for advanced users | Hard on the lower back for beginners |
| Sit-up / crunch trainer | Supports your neck; easy for beginners | Limited range of exercises |
| Multi-function trainer (e.g. Wondercore) | Several exercises in one device | Quality varies a lot |
| Ab bench / decline bench | Progressive training | Takes more space |
| EMS ab stimulator | Extra muscle activation, recovery | Doesn’t burn fat; won’t replace exercise |
EMS ab stimulators: what they can and can’t do
EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) devices send small electrical pulses through gel pads to make your muscles contract. Used correctly, they can activate and help strengthen the muscles under the pads, and some people use them alongside training or for recovery.
What they can’t do is melt belly fat or give you a six-pack on their own. Treat any “fat burning” claim with caution. Think of EMS as an extra, not a replacement for exercise and a sensible diet.
Who should avoid EMS: don’t use it if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, are pregnant, have epilepsy or heart problems, or on broken or irritated skin. If in doubt, check with your GP first.
If you’d like to try one, APE BORN Fitness sells EMS muscle stimulators and replacement gel pads in the UK.
Frequently asked questions
Do ab machines actually work?
They can strengthen your core muscles, especially if they help you keep good form. They won’t remove belly fat by themselves. That needs overall fat loss.
How often should I train abs?
Two to four sessions a week is plenty for most people, with rest days in between.
Do EMS ab belts work?
They can make your ab muscles contract and may help with muscle activation and strength, but they don’t burn meaningful amounts of fat. Visible abs still depend on overall fat loss.
Are ab machines safe for a bad back?
Some are gentler than floor crunches, but if you have back pain, get advice from your GP or a physiotherapist before starting.
