Solesee is an easy to use mirror to help people with diabetes to check the bottom of their feet for dry, cracked and damaged skin. If you suffer from diabetes it means that the skin on your feet is more susceptible to becoming dry and cracked. You may also suffer from a lack of sensation (due to peripheral neuropathy) that means you could damage the skin on your feet and not feel it: small cuts caused by an unnoticed stone in your shoe or a blister due to rubbing shoes are common causes. With any of these conditions, your foot can quickly become infected and possibly lead to an ulcer forming. Therefore you should be checking the underneath of your feet daily so you can identify any potential skin damage – and seek appropriate medical help as necessary. Developed with input from both podiatrists and patients, Solesee has been designed to make checking your feet as easy as possible at home, away on business or on holiday. With a light, shatterproof mirror, Solesee folds into a discrete and easy to carry iPad sized folder that fits into a large handbag, briefcase or rucksack. Directions

Open Solesee and place on the floor. Remove shoes and socks. Turn Solesee at an angle and point your left foot towards the mirror, in the direction indicated by the arrow, so that you can see the bottom of your left foot. Look closely for anything unusual underneath your feet, checking the area around the ball of your foot in particular. Next lift your foot up slightly to check the area around the heel. Repeat with your right foot remembering to alter the position of Solesee on the floor.

Fold easily into an iPad shaped folder for protection

When not being used Solesee folds up easily into a protective folder about the size of an iPad. This makes it easy to carry and ensures that the shatterproof mirror does not get damaged even when packed in a suitcase or bag.

Open Solesee out on the floor

Solesee opens with it’s mirror at the perfect angle to see the bottom of your foot. Place Solesee on the floor close to a chair and take off your shoes and socks.

Check your left foot

Sit in the chair and angle Solesee so you can clearly see the bottom of your left foot. There is an arrow on Solesee to help you. Check for any dry skin, changes in colour or cuts and blisters.

Check your righ foot

Now move Solesee so that you can see the bottom of your right foot. Again there is an arrow to help you. Check for any changes in the condition of your foot as you did for your left foot. If you do spot anything unusual, then please contact a medical professional immediately.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

We realised that people with diabetes were not checking the bottom of their feet regularly enough because there was nothing available that made this easy or safe to do. With the risk of ulcers and infection so much higher in diabetics due to lack of blood circulation (and possibly peripheral neuropathy) in the feet, it is essential that any cracked, dry skin or cuts and blisters are spotted and treated immediately. Solesee makes this possible.

What makes your product special?

The large, shatterproof mirror is set at the perfect angle to see the whole of the bottom of your feet from a seated position. Being shatterproof means that there is no risk of the mirror breaking in use or when travelling. Solesee is able to be taken on holiday in hand luggage or suitcases. When on holiday you tend to wear sandals or go bare foot. This makes it more important to check your feet for any cuts or grazes.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

Knowing that Solesee makes a difference. We wanted to create a product that could have an impact on the quality of life of the user, without them realising it. People who use Solesee could save themselves from being incapacitated by a foot infection or even an amputation just using it as regulalry as they use a toothbrush!
